Bookmarking of Favourite Pages

Bookmarking allows you to store pages you find interesting on your browser or on a social site. These pages are called bookmarks, or your Favourite pages. Hence you will find that on some browsers bookmarks are called favourites.
Bookmarks allow you to return to an interesting page later. When you want to return to it, you want to find it easily without hassle. To return to a bookmarked page from your browser simple click the Bookmark or Favourites link on your browser. Follow your browser’s instructions to find and open the page.
Social bookmarks (i.e. bookmarks stored on social sites) allow you to retrieve a page even when you are not at home. You simply login to the social site from anywhere to find your bookmarks.
Social bookmarks are also about your desire to share the page with others. To do so, you would bookmark the page to a social bookmarking site or to a social news site. This way anyone visiting that site will find it. If you are travelling away from home, and therefore cannot access your browser, you will also be able to find the page from the site you bookmarked it to.
A bookmark is simply what it states... A mark placed on a book that you are reading so that you can return later to the spot where you stopped to continue reading from that spot.
With a book, a bookmark is anything... pen, folded paper, envelop, etc... that you place inside the book to mark where you stopped.
With a site, a bookmark is placed on your browser so that you can return to a web page later. The bookmark consists of the title of the page and its URL (or web address). You can bookmark a page using the bookmarking facilities of your browser. See your browser’s instructions on how to go about this.
You can also bookmark a page using specialist bookmarking software. Such software will also allow you to place your bookmarks online on social bookmarking sites so that other people too can use them. This site provides such software for you to use to bookmark its pages. You access the software through the bookmarking button provided at the top-right of each page.
The bookmarking tool is displayed below this box so that you can learn how to use it. You can use it to bookmark this page, and no other. Note that the bookmarking tool will bookmark only the page on which it is found.
To use the bookmarking tool:
- Click the white bookmark button. A pull-down menu appears containing 8 of the most popular social sites in addition to the Favorites link, which allows you to bookmark to Internet Explorer. There is also an Email link for emailing the page to a friend. A Print link is provided for printing the page on your printer. Finally there is a More link that displays 286 additional social sites you can bookmark to.
- To bookmark the page to Internet Explorer simply click the Favorites link and then click Add to save the page. You should check the title or name of the page in the little window that opens to make sure that it is meaningful to you. If not, change it to what makes sense to you. You can also choose the folder to store the bookmark in. Finally, you may specify tags (descriptive keywords) for the bookmark. These tags make it easy to search for and find the bookmark. Otherwise, you may have difficulty locating the bookmark after you save it.
- To bookmark the page to one of the 8 popular social sites, simply click the site’s link, login or register to the site, and then follow the site’s instructions to complete the process. You will usually need to enter a title for the page, a short description (called the story) for the page, and a set of tags or descriptive keywords to facilitate searches for the bookmark. The tool will automatically fill the title and description for you. The description is usually the first or first-two paragraphs of the text on the page.
- To bookmark the page to one of the other social sites, simply click the More link. This will open a window or tab containing the 286 extra sites. Browse and click the site you want, or enter its name on the text box at the top of the page. Then proceed as described in the previous point.
You should now feel confident to use the bookmarking tool. So go ahead and use it to bookmark your favourite pages. You must use the tool located on a page to bookmark that page.
