An Internet, online, or home-based business can propel you to great financial heights. Many people, working alone or in small teams, have become millionaires as a result of starting and running a successful home-based business. Many also have failed woefully while others have achieved moderate success.

 

Knowing what to do and doing it well ensures that you won’t be one of the woeful failures or moderate successes. The heights you can reach depends only on you – your values, attitude, behaviour, ability, and skills.

 

Starting a successful Internet or online business is both art and science. Art relates to creativity and you need that to come up with solutions to problems. However, creativity does not exist in a vacuum. You need a methodical and orderly scientific framework within which to apply creativity. Hence, problem solving is the combination of art and science.

 

This page provides a scientific or procedural framework within which to apply your creativity to start and run a successful Internet, home-based, or online business. Underpinning this framework is the use of iteration and incrementalism.

You will apply this within the scientific procedure described here for starting and running a successful home-based, Internet, or online business. Iteration and incrementalism is an acknowledgement that we are all human beings, with limitations, not robots or automated machines that can go on and on and on.

  1. Inform Yourself through Research. When you start out you may be totally blank about what to do. Therefore, your first step is to inform yourself thoroughly. You need to read e-books, listen to audio sources, and watch videos. You need a rounded and detailed knowledge in all the online business fields – Internet Marketing, Public Relations, Selling, Copywriting, and Web Development. You will need to bring together different insights from these fields before you can get sales. Or better still, why not team up with a few experts in the fields you don’t want to get into. This way your workload is reduced considerably.
  2. Summarise your Research. Informing yourself is only the first stage of gaining insight into an Internet, online, or home-based business. Good active reading will get your mind ticking, but you’ll be confused by all the various angles you are exposed to when you absorb material. You need to unify or simplify the material to include your own personal thoughts. You need to construct a summary report of your sources and learning. You summarise the key points from your sources and integrate them with your own thoughts. You aim to create synergy among the various viewpoints.
  3. Construct an Application Report. Your summary takes you to the next level of understanding in your attempt to gain insight into your home-based, online, or Internet business. You now have a good understanding of your research sources, having synergised their various contributions. To reach the final level of insight, you need to construct an application report that maps your summary report to the particular circumstances of your business. Your application report discusses how you will apply the learning in your summary report to your particular online, Internet, or home-based business. It is your guide for constructing your online business.
  4. Implement your Newly Acquired Ideas. You now work from the application report to construct your Internet business.
  5. Test your Implementation. You test whether everything is working. You test your web site to ensure it’s fine.
  6. Rework and Refine your Implementation. If there are problems or the results are not what you expect you need to rework and refine your implementation. This may mean starting from step 1.
  7. Solve Any Problems that Come Up. You are going to have big time problems that stretch your problem solving skills. And if you can’t solve these problems you’ll be forced to give up. You can solve problems through your own imagination and skills, through conducting online research using the search engines, through using social media such as forums, or you may decide to bring in complementary-skilled partners to share the business and problems with you.
  8. Check Sales. This is the ultimate guide of achievement for a start-up online, Internet, or home business. Sales are notoriously hard to get for start-ups. In fact, you need to attain a certain level of insight into your Internet business before you can begin to get sales. The moment you start doing so, just know that you are finally there. You just have to keep refining and expanding the process in order to make more and more money. So, if you are not getting sales, simply repeat the whole process from the first step thus moving from one level of refinement to another until you begin to get sales. Then to get more sales, simply repeat the whole process to expand your level of sales.
